Our official theme for this month is, Set Sail! As we journey through Summer and into Autumn we set sail on new adventures and learn to navigate through uncharted waters. On this day, August 3rd in 1492, Christopher Columbus, set sail on a remarkable maritime expiditation that would ultimately lead him to the discovery of new lands. Columbus was renowned as being a remarkable sailor, and was bestowed the name, Admiral of the Sea! During his expeditions, the skillful sailor, encountered many billowing waters that challenged his expertise. There were many naysayers who wanted to intercept his journey and put a halt to his explorations. However, despite the circumstances Columbus pressed on through the uncharted waters to discover new horizons.
This month some of you will be entering into a new school year, moving away for college, starting a new job, becoming a new mother, or mastering a new skill. Setting sail on a new adventure is exciting, fun, and full of new experiences and beginnings. However, sometimes a new adventure can also be intimidating, challenging. and nerve wracking. There are so many questions to be answered as you experience a land unknown to you. Are you going to make friends at your new school? Will you succeed at your new job? Can you take care of a newborn all by yourself? What if you fail on your first day of work, or miss family while you're away at college. The word adventure is even ambiguous. An adventure can involve a thrilling journey on untamed rivers or a relaxing cruise across smooth seas. Setting sail on a new voyage leads us into unknown waters, and requires us to take a leap of faith. Setting sail on a new voyage might test your skills, but if you continue to press on and journey forth you will grow from who you were to who you are meant to become.

Our grandfather kept a poem neatly tucked in his Bible. He put this poem into action through his daily walk. When our father passed away, our grandfather became like a father to my sister and I. We are very thankful that we had such a honorable, loving, tender-hearted man to teach us that it's the set of our souls that determine our goals rather than the waves or winds we may encounter. We wanted to share this special poem with you and pray that you are able to navigate though time knowing that no matter what the waters hold if you set your souls on God, He will navigate you to peaceful waters.
One ship sails East,
And another West,
By the self-same winds that blow,
'Tis the set of the sails
And not the gales,
That tells the way we go.Like the winds of the sea
Are the waves of time,
As we journey along through life,
'Tis the set of the soul,
That determines the goal,
And not the calm or the strife.Poem By: Ella Wilcox
